Aluminum Extrusion Manufacturing Process
Understanding the extrusion process helps buyers make informed decisions about alloy selection, tolerance expectations, and lead time planning:
Aluminum billets (logs) are cut to length, inspected for composition via spectrometer, and preheated to 450-500°C.
The extrusion die is preheated to 450-480°C. The container is heated to maintain temperature uniformity during extrusion.
The hydraulic ram pushes the billet through the die opening. Aluminum flows through the die cavity, forming the desired cross-section. Extrusion speed: 5-60 m/min depending on alloy and complexity.
The extruded profile is rapidly cooled (air, water mist, or water bath) to lock in the metallurgical structure. Critical for achieving T5/T6 properties.
Profiles are stretch-straightened to remove curvature, then cut to the required length using precision saws.
Profiles are aged in furnaces: natural aging (T4) or artificial aging at 170-200°C for T5/T6 tempers. Duration: 4-12 hours.
Anodizing, powder coating, electrophoresis, or other finishes applied as specified.
100% dimensional and visual inspection. Protective film wrapping, kraft paper, and export-grade packaging.

Frequently Asked Questions — Aluminum Profiles
What is the difference between 6061 and 6063 aluminum profiles?
6061 and 6063 are both 6xxx-series alloys, but they differ in strength and extrudability. 6061-T6 offers higher tensile strength (≥260 MPa vs ≥215 MPa for 6063-T6), making it ideal for structural and load-bearing applications. 6063 extrudes more easily, produces a smoother surface finish, and is preferred for architectural applications like window and door frames where appearance matters. 6063 is also more cost-effective for complex cross-sections.
What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for custom aluminum profiles?
For standard profiles, our MOQ is typically 500 kg. For custom profiles requiring a new extrusion die, the MOQ is 1 ton. Die costs range from $200-$2,000 depending on complexity. We also accept sample orders (50-100 kg) for new customers to evaluate quality before placing production orders.
How long does it take to produce custom aluminum profiles?
Lead time depends on whether a new die is needed:
• Standard profiles (existing die): 7-15 days
• Custom profiles (new die): 20-30 days (includes die design 3-5 days, die manufacturing 5-7 days, sample extrusion 2-3 days, and production 7-10 days)
• Expedited service: Available for urgent orders with surcharge
Shipping time: 7-15 days by sea to most international ports.
What surface treatments are available for aluminum profiles?
We offer six main surface treatment options:
1. Mill finish — natural silver, lowest cost
2. Anodizing (8-25 μm) — silver, black, champagne, bronze, gold, custom colors
3. Powder coating (40-120 μm) — any RAL color, matte/glossy/textured
4. Electrophoresis (20-30 μm) — clear, black, bronze
5. Wood grain transfer — oak, walnut, cherry, teak, pine
6. PVDF coating (25-40 μm) — premium weather resistance for facades
What tolerances can you achieve on extruded profiles?
Our standard tolerances conform to ASTM B221 and EN 755:
• Wall thickness: ±0.15-0.30 mm
• Width/height: ±0.30-0.70 mm
• Angles: ±1.0-2.0°
• Twist: 0.5-2.0° per meter
• Straightness: 0.5-1.5 mm per meter
For precision applications, we offer high-precision tolerances: wall thickness ±0.05 mm, angles ±0.3°. Please specify your requirements in the RFQ.
Can you provide custom cross-section profiles from my drawing?
Yes! Custom extrusion is our core capability. Send us your drawing (PDF, DWG, DXF, or STEP) and we will:
1. Review feasibility and recommend the optimal alloy and temper
2. Design the extrusion die (3-5 days)
3. Provide a quote including die cost and unit price
4. Produce sample profiles for your approval (2-3 days after die completion)
5. Proceed to mass production upon approval
Maximum circle size: 350 mm. Minimum wall thickness: 0.4 mm.
What certifications do your aluminum profiles have?
Our products comply with international standards and carry the following certifications:
• ISO 9001:2015 — Quality Management System
• ASTM B221 — Standard for aluminum-alloy extruded bars, rods, profiles, and tubes
• EN 755 — European standard for aluminum extrusions
• GB/T 6892 — Chinese national standard
• JIS H4100 — Japanese industrial standard
• CE marking available for construction products

Mill Test Certificates are provided with every shipment.
Do you provide machining and fabrication services?
Yes, we offer full value-added processing services:
• CNC cutting — precision cutting to length (±0.5 mm)
• Drilling & tapping — holes, threads, and mounting features
• Milling & slotting — custom features and pockets
• Punching — high-volume hole patterns
• Bending — profiles can be bent in T4 temper before aging
• Welding — TIG and MIG welding for assemblies
• Assembly — sub-assembly and kitting
This eliminates the need for secondary processing at your facility, reducing cost and lead time.
How are aluminum profiles packaged for export shipping?
Our export packaging protocol ensures safe delivery:
1. PE protective film on all visible surfaces
2. Kraft paper wrap for moisture protection
3. Steel strap bundling with separator cards between layers
4. ISPM-15 wooden crates (heat-treated, fumigation-free)
5. Desiccant packets to control humidity
6. QR code labels for traceability
Each crate is loaded and secured in 20GP or 40HQ containers. Shipping terms: FOB Shanghai/Ningbo, CIF, or DDP.
What is the difference between T5 and T6 temper for aluminum profiles?
Both T5 and T6 are precipitation-hardened tempers, but the process differs:
• T5: The profile is cooled from extrusion temperature (air or water mist) and then artificially aged in a furnace. No separate solution heat treatment. Lower cost, slightly lower strength.
• T6: The profile undergoes solution heat treatment (full re-heating to 530°C, quenching, then aging). Higher strength and more consistent mechanical properties.
For 6063: T5 ≥160 MPa, T6 ≥215 MPa tensile strength. T5 is common for architectural profiles; T6 is preferred for structural applications.
Can you match a specific color for anodizing or powder coating?
Yes. For anodizing, we offer standard colors (silver, black, champagne, bronze, gold, titanium) and can match custom shades within ±1 ΔE tolerance. For powder coating, we can match any RAL color or Pantone reference, with matte, glossy, satin, textured, or metallic finishes. We provide color samples for approval before production. Minimum color match batch: 500 kg.
