Marine Grade 5052-H116 Coil: What Certification Means

Coil ordered for welded marine structure should be specified as 5052-H116 or H321 — the tempers qualified under ASTM B928 with intergranular corrosion (ASTM G66/G67) test reports. Ordinary H32 may look identical in the warehouse but lacks the sensitization control that prevents intergranular attack in seawater weld zones. 5052 aluminum coil is the feedstock for continuous manufacturing: roll-formed trailer and RV siding, marine boat paneling, standing-seam roofing near the coast, automotive body panels, HVAC ducting, and stamping operations that feed blanks progressively from coil. Its 2.5% magnesium content gives saltwater corrosion resistance and weldability that 3xxx coil cannot match, at a moderate price premium.

Standard production is 0.2–8.0 mm thick and up to 2,650 mm mill width, slit down to 12 mm. Coils are supplied on 150/200/300/405/508 mm IDs (20-inch standard) with OD up to 1,800 mm and coil weights to 5 tons. We match coil dimensions to your uncoiler or press feed specification.

Both are strain-hardened and stabilized, but H116 is the marine-qualified condition per ASTM B928: the mill controls sensitization and tests each lot for intergranular corrosion resistance (ASTM G66/G67). Order H116 (or H321) whenever the coil will be welded into seawater-exposed structure — boat hulls, tanks, dock hardware. H32 suits non-welded or inland service at lower cost.

Yes — multi-strand slitting from 12 mm width upward with ±0.1–0.5 mm width tolerance, camber under 1 mm per 10 m, and edge conditioning (slit, deburred, or rounded). Narrow coils under 200 mm are handled under our dedicated 5052 aluminum strip program with tighter tolerance options.

Choose 5052 when strength (215–265 MPa vs 130–165 MPa), saltwater corrosion resistance, or weldability matters — trailers, marine, tanks. Choose 3003 for cost-sensitive interior parts, cookware, and simple HVAC where its superior deep-draw formality and lower price win. It describes coil orientation. Eye-to-wall = coil standing on its edge (axis horizontal); best container density and standard for roll-forming lines. Eye-to-sky = coil lying flat (axis vertical); required by many slitting lines and press feeds, and safer for coils over ~3 tons. Tell us which your shop needs and we pack and load accordingly.

Weight = thickness (mm) × width (mm) × length (m) × 2.68 kg/m³/1000. Example: 1.0 mm × 1,250 mm coil, one kilometer long = 1.0 × 1250 × 1000 × 2.68 / 1000 = 3,350 kg. Density for 5052 is 2.68 g/cm³ — use this exact figure (not generic 2.70) for freight calculations.

Bare 5052 resists salt spray for years and many trailers and boats use it unpainted or clear-coated.
